I thought it was preachy and melodramatic, which might've been O.K. had it not been tempered with so much hypocrisy sold as moral evolvement into "a man."
...Christopher calls his child's mother a bitch within earshot of his daughter, then tells her never to allow any man to call her that, to much thoughtful head-nodding and "mm-hmm's" in the audience.
I wanted to take a bath after that, it felt so gross...Seriously, people. What is WRONG WITH YOU?
So, to Biggie "They're all bitches except mine," and that made perfect moral sense to the people in the audience.
Even the preachiness was done wrong. It felt like a VH1 original movie, with BET values.
Jamal Woolard as Biggie, was the sole natural, in a sea of overacting!. The story itself, however, brought nothing new to the table. We already know all the behind the scenes stuff. There were no new revelations, here. Nothing made the making of this feel worth the effort.
I say, catch it on cable.
Now. I have a few rants I need to get off my chest.
I'll start with Angela. Bassett.
*sigh*
What in the world, happened to her? She's always been over-rated as an actor to me, but it seems like the older she gets, the more affected she gets. She plays EVERYTHING too broadly. It was to the point of making me feel like I'd wandered into a chitlin'-circuit play!
Angie, when it looks like you might permenantly injure your eyes and neck? "It's too much" is an understatement. PLEASE, for the love of your career, just.... take it down a few notches.
For those who are fans of hers, I do give her much props for having such a regal carriage and for turning down Monster's Ball, but I dare any fan to come here and name one movie, in which she didn't overract. Just name one subtle, nuanced, performance, people. I dare you.
My other rant is about this trailer, shown before the movie:
You know, I watched Laura Linney on Inside the Actor's Studio before I went to see this. I remember her saying she goes for scripts/movies that aren't "...written to be greenlit."
Obsessed was written to be greenlit. And worse yet, using a demographic that really doesn't need to be exploited any more than it already is, unashamedly using stereotypes saturated with very old racist and sexist beliefs.
It sickened me to hear all the young black women whoopping, hollaring, and telling their girlfriends that they couldn't wait to see this.
..Really, ladies?
It's Disclosure for the angry jealous black woman, and you can't wait for hollywood sell you MORE of the same sterotypical b.s. they've been inflicting upon you for decades?
REALLY?!
...The director's name is Steve Shill, no joke. And y'all wonder how BET lasted this long.
Coming back to Notorious for a second, I'd LOVE see some filmmaker honestly tackle all the esteem-damage black women have to go through, ultimately destroying the most vunerable, to the point of disrepair...
I could go off on a whole other tangent on why folks who think her music is sexually empowering are wrong... (It's the sexually-abused/discarded woman who's fierce in her assertion that she's
As I said, I didn't care for the film. I'm tired of thin characters, soap-opera stories, and TV-style film-making being given a pass because it's one of the few "black movies."
...We can do better, dammit.

PARENTS: Keep the kids away. Unless you want them to idolize this mess.
P.S. Want another reason why I blog about movies? Ebert and Roeper's replacements loved Notorious. *shudder*
P.P.S. The Wolverine trailer was quite nice. :)

"They're all bitches except mine," <- That right there, is a scarrrry concept.
The only thing that brings me joy in that trailer is Beyonce's fierce face at 1:44.
(And is it me, or is Ali Larter is quite good at playing promiscuous psychopaths?)
I understand your contempt for this movie...but also this movie brought me back to a time when rap/hip hop, however mainstream, MEANT SOMETHING. B.I.G told of his personal experiences and feelings in his art, not just "Supaman dat hoe" or being in love with a stripper. Tupac and Biggie found a form of expression and community with their work (If you're a nerd, you may be familiar with comic book writer Crumb...truly a sick individual if he did not have his art to keep him in check). Notorious is in no way as bad a film as your usual Tyler Perry production, and I liked its theme of changing yourself before you can change others.
All I can say is: DC GIRL FOR THE MOTHER FRAKKIN WIN!!!!!
I was about a hair's breath away from seeing Notorious on Friday but thought better of it. So glad I didn't go because the aforementioned scene would've had me smashing my head through a concession case.
I wondered too why this movie was being made now and what was going to be said that hasn't already been stated? It came off to me like someone trying to turn a quick buck off of Biggie's name.
2. I consider myself an Angela Bassett fan and for me she can usually do no wrong but even I have to admit that I thought she was over acting in Meet the Browns. More than once I kept saying, "all right girl, we know you're fierce, let's tone it back." I think it's one of those things where her style of acting has brought her success that she goes with that style even when she shouldn't.
While no movies come to mind, the only thing that I've seen her give a subdued, nuanced performance was when she guest-starred on Alias.
3. Thank you for calling that shit on Obsessed. Someone posted the trailer in a community and I reiterated the same sentiment.
Oh and in regards to another commenter, one of my old boss's had the same traits as Ali Larter's character. Strikingly beautiful bruenette but full-on bipolar passive aggressive psychopath. She was just as crazy if not crazier than Larter's character. It was freaky watching that trailer because their personalities were uncanny
When human resources refused to do anything about her, I thought I was gonna have to catch a case and deal with her myself. I already had the piano chord ready to wrap around her chicken neck.
@BigDM
I feel you on the significance of his character and the damage being a part of what made him human. His art being a form of therapy for him.
BUT.
That's not how the film portrayed it. It felt to me, like they were showing him a changed man, instead of the man dealing with issues through good music.
And themes that hard-hitting are always off-putting to me. Strange that you would bring up Crumb because American Splendor, about another damaged comicbook artist/writer is of a quality that is MUCH more what I would have loved to see for Notorious.
@neo
Thanks, man. :)
@La Diva Slim
No need to be PO'ed by ANYONE disagreeing about the level of talent an actor possesses.
If you are? Lady, reevaluate your priorities.
Get out, get some air, have some fun, because it's small stuff in the grand scheme of life.
It's an opinion about an actor's abilities.
It has no bearing on how you live or who you are as a person.
I respect Angie. I am proud of her accomplishments as a black woman, her regal carriage (as I said), and ESPECIALLY her turning down Monster's Ball.
But.
I think she's a crap actor.
There's no changing that opinion. And there's no need to refer to some collective "people" when it's just one of me stating the opinion.
As for an example? The movie you gave as an example of her subtle acting, Strange Days has a bit from her that was sampled for a loud thumping techno track, Fatboy Slim's "Right Here, Right Now" (which I love BTW).
She sounds like she's screaming into a mega-phone. That's why it was used. It's not subtle.
Still, I do hope your plug brings more traffic to your site. :)

You broke that rule, so you got deleted.
That Obsessed trailer made me sick. Tyler Perry did the same with "The Family That Preys". They just need to stop.
