According to Variety, Dev Patel has replaced Jesse McCartney as Zuko in the Avatar: The Last Airbender movie, because of "scheduling conflicts".
Uh, huh.
...And my real name is Dirt McGirt.
From what I've heard from the fans, this actor seems more suited for Sokka, but then that would ruin the whole "tokenish" gesture, wouldn't it?
...Making the sole person of color (and the only one with real acting cred, mind you) a good guy, too?
I love M. Knight's quote on this:
Patel was "already one of the guys I was interested in. Then I saw 'Slumdog Millionaire,' and the kid just grew in my eyes," he said.

So, then why the F^&* didn't you hire him in the FIRST PLACE?!

*sigh* Oh, Hollywood you so predictable with the racefailure.

Pretty soon, Harold and Kumar are going to be in the movie. Just you wait.
Not only does he have good acting cred, he's got a blackbelt as well. (As opposed to Jesse's "ninja fighting" for three hours a day.) Aside from fangirl-appeal, I'm still failing to find the logic behind casting McCartney.
Still, I think Dev would make a better Sokka; he's got the goofball appeal, and I would LOVE for Rathbone and his ignorant comments to be out of the movie.
It amazes me how even with additional (albeit token) diversity, the casting directors are still messing things up. Is it /that/ hard to match appearances and skintones? The entire cartoon is basically a visual guide :|
Is Airbender really that big of a deal? I've seen the cartoon and the video game before, but I had no idea it was so popular that it's even worthy of caring who they cast. They should be doing this mess in CGI or something anyway. Cartoons converted to live-action never turn out well.
Patel was on the British series Skins (which is a great show if you get a chance to catch it) and I agree that he makes a far better Sokka as the character he played on Skins is roughly similar to Sokka's personality.
What I also find interesting is that M. Knight claims that it was Slumdog Millionaire that inspired him to hire Patel...the same movie that's been in the midst of all of the controversy.
And said movie with controversial themes inspired him to hire Patel for his movie that is full of racefail....just saying.
Well the controversy has nothing to do with the quality of the film or Patel's work in the film. I just think it was b.s. in general. If he liked Patel so much before, he should've hired him for a part before now.
Will the ads say..."From the director of THE HAPPENING...I mean, LADY IN THE WATER...I mean, THE VILLAGE...Do you remember THE SIXTH SENSE? Yeah, THE SIXTH SENSE!!!"
There's just no way Shyamalan had EVER heard of Patel before Slumdog, let alone planned on casting him. What a lame excuse.
I actually know nothing about the Airbender backstory or anything, but if I were a fan, I would be MOST upset that that idiot has anything to do with this movie in the first place.
Could anyone take a stab at Avatar's ever growing budget?
You have a great site. Keep up the good word.
Does Dav Patel along with other actors have the makings of a new wave of "fresh" faces that Hollywood is so willing to market to its domestic audience?
@Johnysuede
YES, HE DOES.
I'm just hoping they can get past "the brown" enough to realize this.
